I've always been borderline unemployable
The corporate machine never wanted me
Me, awkwardly trying to act like a normal human
I’ve worked at all kinds of companies: Fortune 500 (Abercrombie & Fitch), startups (CreativeLive), agencies working with Swiffer, Febreze, Red Bull, etc and more.
And the common thread is that I just didn’t fit in at any of them.
It was hard enough to even get hired in the first place because my resume is pretty non-linear.
(I naively thought that having a diverse background would be a good thing… it’s not. HR types want you to be one thing, and one thing only.)
And once I got the job it was usually the same story.
I never really fit neatly into any one job description, which made me feel so claustrophobic, stifled and frustrated— I always wanted to do more, but the machine insisted on putting me in the corner with my hands tied.
And of course, I had to play the game of corporate politics (which usually means pretending that someone’s terrible idea is actually a good one, because it’s more important that people like you than whether you’re actually good at your job).
I tried so hard to act like one of them and hide who I really was, but I just couldn’t do it… they could always tell that I wasn’t one of them, and they didn’t like it.
(can you tell I’m still a little salty about it? 😅)
Which is exactly why I started building my personal brand on YouTube (and later LinkedIn): because I was tired of playing by their rules.
I was exhausted from years of appeasing them every day, censoring myself and second-guessing everything I did because I was afraid it would upset them… I wanted to be FREE.
And I knew that the key to freedom was building my own personal brand— because people with an audience play by an entirely different set of rules than people who have to rely on the approval of corporate overlords.
Photo of me speaking in front of a crowd so you’ll think I’m high-status and important
And I’m incredibly happy to say that now I’m there… I can show up every day as my honest, unfiltered, authentic self and I’m REWARDED for it.
And let me tell you, it feels AMAZING.
No more self-censorship. No more exhausting corporate political BS.
I get to talk to smart, cool people every day and collaborate with them on building their businesses.
I genuinely like and respect every single person I work with (hopefully they feel the same about me 😅) and it makes me SO happy!
So here’s my point: If you’re as fed up with the BS as I was, start building your escape pod now.
Having a personal brand an audience of people who know and respect you for who you are is the bridge to a world where you can be your authentic self all day, every day.
→ Only working with people who you respect and vibe with
→ Becoming peers / friends with other big names in your niche
→ Getting paid a premium for your expertise and skills
You don’t need to have 100k LinkedIn followers or YouTube subscribers. A small but engaged following is enough for most people.
So my advice is start TODAY.
Try posting 2-3 times a week on LinkedIn (more details on exactly what to post in this newsletter), and spend 10-20 minutes a day commenting on posts from people you think are interesting and cool.
Don’t worry about doing exactly the “right” things for now… just start.
I promise you’ll be glad you did!
