- It's ok if your content is ugly
It's ok if your content is ugly
Seriously, it is.
Me, the most clueless YouTuber
Fun fact: I barely know how to use my camera. I have no clue what kind of lens I have, what f-stop or ISO I use, or any of that.
I just put it on auto and leave it alone. It’s been untouched for so long that it literally has cobwebs on it!
And I still got 130 million views on my videos. Why?
Because nobody really gives a sht about how fancy your content does (or doesn’t look).
CoPilot is just the new “copy pasting from Stack Overflow” tbh
For example:
ThePrimeTime gets 100k views on almost every one of his videos, and 90% of them are the same format: he’s greenscreened over a news article, reading it and giving his commentary as he goes.
It’s not just “raw,” it’s straight up ugly 🫣
But it obviously doesn’t matter, because the audience isn’t here for fancy visuals. They’re here to get his perspective on software engineering (he was an engineer at Netflix for 10 years or something).
He’s super entertaining AND super knowledgeable. Who cares if it’s ugly?
815 views from 1.8 million subscribers… oof
Compare that with all the big company channels that have huge production budgets and super slick visuals that can’t even break 1k views per video 😬
Why?
Because their content sucks.
It’s boring and self-promotional, and nobody wants to watch that sht. The glossiest, fanciest production in the world doesn’t matter if you have nothing to say, or you’re just pumping out glorified commercials.
And same is true on LinkedIn:
925 likes on a graphic made in Google Slides!
Michael Ho is an exited founder and fundraising advisor who gets hundreds of likes on most of his posts— and for good reason, because he’s incredibly sharp.
And the best part is that he makes all his graphics in Google Slides! They’re not the most polished from a visual design perspective, but it doesn’t matter at ALL.
You read one of his posts, look at the graphic, and it’s obvious in about 5 seconds that he knows his sht backwards and forwards. The dude is an analytical monster.
Who cares if he uses default Google fonts? If I was raising a series A, he’d be the very first person I would call.
Why am I telling you this?
Because a lot of people get stuck in "planning" mode forever. They're always strategizing, organizing, or finding some excuse not to start putting out content and building their business.
→ “I just need to upgrade my camera”
→ “As soon as I get my new branding done”
→ “When my new website is up”
Etc etc etc.
The bottom line:
None of that sht matters.
If you have a smartphone and a free Canva account, you have everything you need to make great content on YouTube or LinkedIn.
→ You do NOT need a fancy camera.
→ You do NOT need slick graphics, pro photos, a new website, etc etc.
YOU are what your audience cares about, not your camera or your logo!
You almost certainly have everything you need. So what are you waiting for?
PS - Here’s the part where I try to sell you something:
I can help you:
→ Define your positioning to immediately stand out from the crowd
→ Figure out your content strategy for LinkedIn or YouTube
→ Create offers that sell (consulting, courses, software, etc)
