Struggling with self-doubt? You're not alone...
Here's how I deal with it
Me, staring at the specter of death getting closer every day
I’ve made something like 1200 YouTube videos now and god knows how many posts on Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter and one thing has been constant:
Self-doubt is always lingering in the back of my mind.
But I’ve learned to quiet that voice, and even use it as a positive force— which is why I have a lot to say about this question from Alice Ramsay:
Self-doubt is totally normal, but don’t let it consume you
Every good creator I know goes on the same emotional rollercoaster with their content— you go from loving your work to hating it to loving it and back again, all in the span of literally 1 minute 😅
I think it’s probably an inherent part of building an audience and putting yourself out there.
BUT (here’s the big but): it’s not sustainable to spend every waking moment like that.
Picking yourself apart like that 24/7 is just gonna make you feel like 💩, and feeling like 💩 all day is no way to live.
The trick is to learn how to channel it into something positive:
You could spend your whole life going down this rabbit hole…
Focus on what matters
You just can’t fixate on all the details, all the time— so you need to prioritize the ones that matter and let the rest of them go.
Your time as a creator is your most valuable resource, so you need to spend it where it’s gonna make the biggest difference.
🟣 LINKEDIN
↳ Is your ICP engaging with your content?
↳ Are you getting inbound from your ICP?
↳ Are you seeing regulars in the comments?
🟣 YOUTUBE
↳ Is retention at least 30%?
↳ Are you gaining subs faster than before?
↳ Are the comments mostly positive?
If the answer to those questions is yes, then you’re good! Take a breath and enjoy yourself.
If the answer is no, then ask yourself why— what specific things could you do differently to change the equation?
Adjust, learn, and repeat.
Relax, have fun and grow 😇
Once you get a sense of what details actually MATTER, it’s a totally different ballgame.
You don’t stress about everything all the time, because you know exactly what levers to pull when you want to grow your audience or generate more revenue.
(for example, I never look at all those YouTube analytics because 90% of them don’t matter at all)
That’s when things get really cool, because it’s like a fun puzzle or a video game… except when you figure the game out, instead of a high score you get money 🤑
PS - Here’s the part where I try to sell you something If you want to talk about how you can use LinkedIn or YouTube to grow your business, reply to this email or just set up a call here!
